Dec 11 2013 - In Memoriam: Jim Hall, December 4, 1930 - December 10, 2013

We are deeply saddened by the loss of the great Jim Hall, who passed away on Tuesday, December 10th. Jim joined the ArtistShare family in 2004, the same year that he was named a NEA Jazz Master. During his time with us, he completed several critically-acclaimed and historically significant fan-funded projects, all of which we are very proud to have taken part in. Jim was deeply grateful to all of his ArtistShare participants who supported his music, and he enjoyed the enriching relationships he developed with his fans through ArtistShare over the years.

Jim Hall influenced an entire generation of jazz musicians and is considered by many to be one of the greatest jazz guitarists ever. His "subtle technique, lyrical sound and introspective approach strongly influenced younger proteges such as Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell" (Charles Gans, Asssociated Press). Speaking about Jim's passing, Pat Metheny told the AP, "Jim was one of the most important improvising guitarists in jazz history. His musical generosity was an exact reflection of his deep humanity."  Jim was named one of the 25 guitarists "who shook the world," along with artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, according to Guitar Player magazine in 1992. From his early work with Jimmy Guiffre and Chico Hamilton to his now legendary collaborations with Sonny Rollins, Paul Desmond, Ron Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Ben Webster, Lee Konitz and Art Farmer, Jim was a major figure in the legacy of American music. Sonny Rollins said, "Jim was an essentially beautiful human being, I don't know anybody who didn't love him, including myself. He was the consummate musician and it was a privilege to work with him."

He will be greatly missed by all of us at ArtistShare, and by guitarists and lovers of jazz everywhere.
