About This Offer
Recorded on Allégresse, "Journey Home" is flamenco-flavored in its rhythm. This piece has a flowing feeling that makes it sound easier to play than it actually is. It's written in 12/8, but the bars are subdivided into 6/8 & 3/4 while shifting in various ways using hemiola. Rhythmically, it's a piece the players just have to get in their ears. This doesn't "read down" – trust me on that. It didn't read down for my group either – the band looked at me like I had four heads. But after a time, it just locked into place. The streamed conducting video I included will hopefully be helpful to you. I've heard many a group play this with perfect precision, so it is possible given the time and diligence. The solos are for alto and guitar, but I often have a trombonist play the guitar solo. That solo is included in the 2nd trombone part.
And, while it's not necessary to have cajon play percussion on this piece, it's a nice addition if you have a player handy. It really helps the 6/8 and 3/4 switch-ups to lock into place.
