Recorded on Allégresse, "Nocturne" may be the saddest piece I've ever written. I'm not sure what happened to me when I wrote this, but something was coming through that I am glad to say, lifted. My music went through a marked shift in the middle of writing the album, Allégresse. The catalyst was going to Brazil. You can easily hear what's before Brazil and after Brazil. "Nocturne" and "Dissolution" were pre-Brazil. Brazil showed me there's no shame in showing joy in art.

"Nocturne" has a whole lot of English horn and oboe, and we only performed it live a couple of times. It features Frank Kimbrough (piano), who played a beautiful solo having barely done it before. When we recorded this, we hadn't played it more than maybe once, so we were all discovering the music as the tape rolled, which does give a nice quality. But, I have to confess that this piece is not on my list of favorites, but I am including it here, because it is part of the story of finding my way, which is a lifetime search.
