"Tork's Cafe" is among my few pieces that has no doubles, and it is not particularly difficult to play. I wrote this piece while thinking back on a little truck stop (pictured here) where I used to waitress at in southwest Minnesota. The piece has a little of a 'trucker' vibe, and the piece benefits by horns that 'lay back' a little. Commissioned by the Danish Radio Big Band, "Tork's Cafe" has a guitar solo for an intro, and then trombone and tenor solos, but we often have the baritone or alto solo as an alternative to the tenor, switching it up to fill out a set. The musicians just cover each other' backgrounds in that case.
The downloadable MP3 of the music, performed live in 2000 by my band at The Jazz Standard in New York City will hopefully be of assistance, as will the streamed video where I discuss rehearsal tips for the piece.
