About This Offer
Bob wrote "Make Me Smile" in 1981 as a feature for lead alto saxophonist,
longtime member, and current Artistic Director of the Vanguard Jazz
Orchestra, Dick Oatts. It is a wonderful, swinging piece that is full of
personality, and let's Dick really shine throughout. The alto is the only
solo, though the rest of the band does have a few moments to try out their
percussion playing at the beginning and end.
This work was included on the Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra's 1982
recording, Make Me Smile & Other New Works by Bob Brookmeyer. After
years of being out of print (and before that, published with many mistakes),
we are thrilled to finally make this chart available again, re-engraved and
edited directly from Bob's original manuscript score, and the original parts
provided by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. This is the first time in almost
forty years that this music is available to be studied and performed as Bob
originally conceived it.
