About This Offer

Recorded on Coming About, "Bombshelter Beast" is the first movement of "Scenes from Childhood" that was commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and premiered there in 1995. It can be performed as a stand-alone piece. It's powerful and aggressive and features a boisterous baritone solo and prominent electric guitar – a great feature for a guitarist that can really rock out. It can be played on acoustic bass, but it's probably more fun and more on point on electric. This piece is a little tricky rhythmically, but once everyone gets it in their ear, it's not too difficult to play maybe, especially with the help of the recording. There is the added bonus that the only doubles are two sopranos in the alto chairs. With the added assistance of the interview with guitarist, Ben Monder, and my video on rehearsing this piece, hopefully you'll be on your way to a successful performance.

We used theremin on the recording, played by Scott Robinson, but I have performed it with groups that even used a digital air-raid siren. It's a great effect if you can manage a way to reproduce that "air-raid" siren sound.
