Oct 06 2015 - Artist Spotlight: Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on Alex Skolnick's Planetary Coalition

Cuban drummer and percussionist, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, first gained international recognition while playing for Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s group, Proyecto. He has played on several Grammy Award winning albums, including Roy Hargrove’s Havana, Carlos Santana’s Supernatural, Alejandro Sanz’ No es lo mismo, and Eddie Palmieri’s Listen Here. El Negro won his own Grammy award in 2003 for Live at the Blue Note with Michel Camilo and Charles Flores.

Alex Skolnick’s Planetary Coalition features the Cuban drummer’s folkloric based grooves on the track, “Mojito”. El Negro’s daughter, Jennifer Hernandez, co-wrote the song with Alex and plays piano on the recording.

We have submitted Planetary Coalition for consideration to the 58th Grammy Awards. It ranked as one of the 50 best by Guitar World, the Top Ten of Acoustic Nation, World Music Central`s Best World Music Albums.
