Welcome to
the Haydn and Dvorak Project on
ArtistShare. As a participant in this project you will have a front row seat as
we explore the creative process behind the St Lawrence String Quartet and the
making of this exciting new recording. The Haydn and Dvorak project also
provides the unique opportunity for fans to play a vital role in the creation of
new music by the SLSQ.
Here is
what Christopher Costanza (cello) has to say about the
pieces:
"Our
repertoire will be 2 Haydn quartets, Op. 54, No. 2 in C Major and Op. 77, No.1 in G
Major. We're also planning to record the last published Dvorak quartet, Op. 106
in G Major (he actually composed his Op. 105 quartet after the Op. 106). Our
reasons for this repertoire choice are pretty straightforward: Haydn is the
father of the string quartet (the first composer to write for this combination
of instruments), and a favorite of the St. Lawrence, especially Geoff. And
Dvorak is another natural choice for us, since Scott and I in particular are
huge Dvorak fans, at least in part because Dvorak shared an interest with both
Scott and me: trains, especially the passenger variety!! But most importantly,
we all love Dvorak's fantastically energetic, tuneful, and folk-influenced
writing."
