JUMP!
JUMP!  began as a song cycle for three singers and small ensemble, (harmonium, guitar, double bass, bassoon and cello, and percussion). I started by layering selections from the classical and baroque operatic canon with my original lyrics compositions,  a personal embrace of classical operatic music.
After a short time I approached director JoAnne Akalaitis and artist Kiki Smith, to see if they would be interested in developing this into a theater piece. We had our first workshop of the piece at The Public Theater in New York fall 2008, our second in  January 2009 and, after collaborating with playwright David Greenspan, a reading Dec. 15th 2009.

JUMP! has the music musical armature of  Puccini’s Tosca, I am joined on  stage by  Sarah Bernhardt (who portrayed La Tosca in the 19th century). My music and songs draw upon elements of the Tosca story and the questions of love, and career that plagued Bernhardt, Tosca, and me.
