Project Highlights

I often feel as though I ‘m standing on moving ground. My experience tells me that long held cultural beliefs and definitions are shifting and reshaping under my feet. I want to make music that emotionally and structurally reflects my sense of that changing reality.

About this project

Throughout my career I have evolved an artistic practice that resembles a treasure hunt; finding clues to next creative steps in deliberately sought and incidentally discovered sources. I have sampled, collaged, interpreted, and responded to a wide variety of musical repertoire and genres.

Jump -- a kaleidoscopic music-theatre collage -- conceived by singer/composer Nora York, composer/pianist Jamie Lawrence, and playwright David Greenspan -- was first seen as a staged workshop at Under the Radar festival January 2011.  Under the direction of JoAnne Akalaitis – Jump was a festival hit.

Stemming from my affection for the lush and emotionally expansive aspects of grand opera and a fascination with the psychological and social phenomena of the Diva, I first conceived Jump as a musical response to Giacomo Puccini's Tosca. My musical inventions, were interwoven with Puccini's arias. Later David Greenspan added a reworking of writings by and about Turn of the Century actress Sarah Bernhardt – who performed the role of Floria Tosca for twenty-five years and served as the inspiration Puccini – and for whom the original Sardou play "La Tosca" was written.
