Oct 02 2015 - Artist Spotlight: Maria Schneider

David Bowie had been a fan of the Maria Schneider Orchestra for years, secretly coming to see her ensemble blow away audiences. In the summer of 2014, Maria and Bowie worked together to write and record a new single, the only new song to appear on Bowie’s career spanning collection, “Nothing Has Changed”. “Sue” features the Maria Schneider Orchestra in top form and solos from trombonist, Ryan Keberle, as well as tenor saxophonist, Donny McCaslin (See Artist Spotlight on Donny here).

However, recording with a rock legend is not the only thing Maria accomplished last summer. In August, 2014, Maria entered the studio with her orchestra to record, The Thompson Fields. Released in May 2015, it is the Maria Schneider Orchestra’s first studio recording in 8 years and it truly encompasses every aspect of her compositional prowess. All of this has been made possible by support from her ArtistShare participants who have become a part of her creative process, every step of the way.

The Thompson Fields has been submitted for consideration in the 58th Grammy Awards. For more information on the ArtistShare artists submitted, click here.
